From September 15 through October 15, Penns Grove-Carneys Point Regional School District celebrates the unique history, diverse cultures, beautiful traditions, and rich contributions of Hispanic Americans whose heritage has roots in Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Enacted into law in August 1988, the month is celebrated over 30 days to recognize the number of Central American countries that achieved independence in September and October, including Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Honduras. It is a time to honor the contributions Hispanic and Latino Americans have made to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. I encourage all to use this time to affirm our students’ identities. May we know our students by name, strength, and story! It is so important that we teach our students to be proud of who they are and where they come from.
This year's theme is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together”. The theme is meant to capture the Hispanic experience's "spirit of innovation, resilience, and unity."
Over the remainder of the celebration, teachers will include in their planning, lessons that integrate books, contributions, arts, and other connections across the curriculum.
We look forward to seeing the great activities taking place!
Kindly,
Dr. Sydonie Maitland
